The Future of Terrorism: What al-Qaida Really Wants

There must be something particularly trustworthy about the Jordanian journalist Fouad Hussein. After all, he has managed to get some of the the most sought after terrorists to open up to him. Maybe it helped that they spent time together in prison many years ago — when Hussein was a political prisoner he successfully negotiated for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to be released from solitary confinement. Or is it because of the honest and direct way in which he puts his ideas onto paper? Whatever the reason, the result is that a film which Hussein made about al-Zarqawi has even been shown on al-Qaida affiliated Web sites. “That showed me that they at least felt understood,” the journalist says.

Even for an Arab journalist it is no easy matter getting in touch with al-Qaida’s inner circle. Nevertheless, Hussein, who is based in Amman, Jordan, has succeeded in turning his correspondence with the terrorists into a remarkable book: “al-Zarqawi – al-Qaida’s Second Generation.”

If you meet Hussein, as you might when he is relaxing in Amman’s Café Vienna, you see he is calm and laid-back, without any of the glamour of a secret service spy. But what this small, slim man has to report is nothing less than the world’s most dangerous terrorist network’s plan of action: al-Qaida’s strategy for the next two decades. It is both frightening and absurd, a lunatic plan conceived by fanatics who live in their own world, but who continually manage to break into the real world with their brutal acts of violence.

One of Hussein’s most sensational sources for the book, according to what he told SPIEGEL Online, was Seif al-Adl. The Egyptian terrorist, who is suspected of taking part in the attacks on the American Embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi in 1998, has a ransom of US$5 million on his head from the FBI. Secret services suspect that al-Adl is now in Iran.

To prove that he really has had contact to al-Adl, Hussein includes in the first two pages of the book a copy of a hand-written letter the wanted man sent to the author. In the original document, which is 15 pages long, al-Adl describes the disagreements between al-Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden during the Afghanistan war. “Statements from Seif al-Adl have also crept into the chapter on al-Qaida’s strategy,” explains Fouad Hussein.

An Islamic Caliphate in Seven Easy Steps

In the introduction, the Jordanian journalist writes, “I interviewed a whole range of al-Qaida members with different ideologies to get an idea of how the war between the terrorists and Washington would develop in the future.” What he then describes between pages 202 and 213 is a scenario, proof both of the terrorists’ blindness as well as their brutal single-mindedness. In seven phases the terror network hopes to establish an Islamic caliphate which the West will then be too weak to fight.

The First Phase Known as “the awakening” — this has already been carried out and was supposed to have lasted from 2000 to 2003, or more precisely from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington to the fall of Baghdad in 2003. The aim of the attacks of 9/11 was to provoke the US into declaring war on the Islamic world and thereby “awakening” Muslims. “The first phase was judged by the strategists and masterminds behind al-Qaida as very successful,” writes Hussein. “The battle field was opened up and the Americans and their allies became a closer and easier target.” The terrorist network is also reported as being satisfied that its message can now be heard “everywhere.”

The Second Phase “Opening Eyes” is, according to Hussein’s definition, the period we are now in and should last until 2006. Hussein says the terrorists hope to make the western conspiracy aware of the “Islamic community.” Hussein believes this is a phase in which al-Qaida wants an organization to develop into a movement. The network is banking on recruiting young men during this period. Iraq should become the center for all global operations, with an “army” set up there and bases established in other Arabic states.

The Third Phase This is described as “Arising and Standing Up” and should last from 2007 to 2010. “There will be a focus on Syria,” prophesies Hussein, based on what his sources told him. The fighting cadres are supposedly already prepared and some are in Iraq. Attacks on Turkey and — even more explosive — in Israel are predicted. Al-Qaida’s masterminds hope that attacks on Israel will help the terrorist group become a recognized organization. The author also believes that countries neighboring Iraq, such as Jordan, are also in danger.

The Fourth Phase Between 2010 and 2013, Hussein writes that al-Qaida will aim to bring about the collapse of the hated Arabic governments. The estimate is that “the creeping loss of the regimes’ power will lead to a steady growth in strength within al-Qaida.” At the same time attacks will be carried out against oil suppliers and the US economy will be targeted using cyber terrorism.

The Fifth Phase This will be the point at which an Islamic state, or caliphate, can be declared. The plan is that by this time, between 2013 and 2016, Western influence in the Islamic world will be so reduced and Israel weakened so much, that resistance will not be feared. Al-Qaida hopes that by then the Islamic state will be able to bring about a new world order.

The Sixth Phase Hussein believes that from 2016 onwards there will a period of “total confrontation.” As soon as the caliphate has been declared the “Islamic army” it will instigate the “fight between the believers and the non-believers” which has so often been predicted by Osama bin Laden.

The Seventh Phase This final stage is described as “definitive victory.” Hussein writes that in the terrorists’ eyes, because the rest of the world will be so beaten down by the “one-and-a-half billion Muslims,” the caliphate will undoubtedly succeed. This phase should be completed by 2020, although the war shouldn’t last longer than two years.

A Serious Plan?

But just how serious is this scenario? “Al-Qaida makes no compromises,” says the book’s author Fouad Hussein. He obviously believes that this seven-point plan could well become the guiding principle for a whole range of al-Qaida fighters. Hussein is far from an hysterical alarmist — in fact he is seen as a serious journalist and his Zarqawi book is better than most of the reports in Arabic on the subject. Only last year, the journalist made a film which was received with great interest and was shown on the German-French TV channel arte. In it he provided deep insights into al-Qaida’s internet propaganda machine.

Nevertheless, there is no way the scenario he depicts can be seen as a plan which al-Qaida can follow step by step. The terrorist network just doesn’t work like that anymore. The significance of the central leadership has diminished and its direct commands have lost a great deal of importance. The supposed master plan for the years 2000 to 2020 reads in parts more like a group of ideas cobbled together in retrospect, than something planned and presented in advance. And not to mention the terrorist agenda is simply unworkable: the idea that al-Qaida could set up a caliphate in the entire Islamic world is absurd. The 20-year plan is based mainly on religious ideas. It hardly has anything to do with reality — especially phases four to seven.

But that doesn’t mean that we should simply discount everything that Hussein has uncovered. A few of the steps in the agenda are plausible. The idea that Syria will become a focus for the Mujahedin is regarded by experts as highly likely. “Close ranks, concentrate on getting more recruits, set up cells,” was the call to the “Mujahedin in Syria” which appeared on one Web site at the beginning of August. From the point of view of the jihadists, Israel and Turkey are also fairly logical targets for an escalation of the confrontation. “Al-Qaida views every fight as a victory, because for so long Muslims didn’t have any weapons at all,” says Hussein. He may not be far off. As for Jordan, al-Qaida leaders such as al-Zarqawi, have already made attacks on the country. They have also stated on numerous occasions that Jerusalem is the real target.

Equally, the idea that in the future al-Qaida could increasingly become a movement that attracts young frustrated men, is hardly a theory plucked out of thin air. The terror network puts a lot of effort into its propaganda — assumedly in order to expand its support base.

Attacks on the West: a Means to an End

What is interesting is that major attacks against the West are not even mentioned by Fouad Hussein. Terrorism here cannot be ignored — but it seems these attacks simply supplement the larger aim of setting up an Islamic caliphate. Attacks such as those in New York, Madrid and London would in this case not be ends in themselves, but rather means to a achieve a larger purpose — steps in a process of increasing insecurity in the West.

Nowadays, it is harder than ever to truly understand al-Qaida: the organization has degenerated into branches and loosely connected cells, related groups are taken in, and people who hardly had anything to do with al-Qaida before, now carry out attacks in its name. It is hard to imagine orders which come right from the top because Osama bin Laden spends all his time struggling to survive. At the same time, the division between foot soldiers in the organization and sympathizers is becoming increasingly blurred. It is all too easy to fall prey to disinformation — al-Qaida also excels in this area. Even Hussein’s scenario should be judged skeptically.

His book should therefore be read for what it really is: an attempt to second guess how al-Qaida terrorists think, what they really want and how they propose to get there.

Back in 2005, Jordanian journalist Fouad Hussein published al-Qaida’s manifesto. In his book, he outlined al-Qaida’s seven-point plan over a 20-year period: “An Islamic Caliphate in Seven Easy Steps.” Ten years later, we can see how al-Qaida and other Islamic jihad groups have followed this plan to the letter – with remarkable success, thanks to the weakness, fecklessness and willful ignorance of Western leaders.

Journalist Yassin Musharbash wrote about Hussein and his book in the German publication Der Spiegel on Aug. 12, 2005, in an article entitled, “The Future of Terrorism: What al-Qaida Really Wants.” Musharbash wrote, “[W]hat this small, slim man has to report is nothing less than the world’s most dangerous terrorist network’s plan of action: al-Qaida’s strategy for the next two decades. It is both frightening and absurd, a lunatic plan conceived by fanatics who live in their own world.”

Der Spiegel appears to be laughing at the plan in this article. But read it now – 10 years on. Who’s laughing now? From Sept. 11 to “the awakening,” the focus on Syria, the overthrow of secular Arab regimes, the declaration of the Caliphate – it’s all there. The article declares it “unworkable” at the time – as well as “both frightening and absurd, a lunatic plan.”

Musharbash wrote: “And not to mention the terrorist agenda is simply unworkable: The idea that al-Qaida could set up a caliphate in the entire Islamic world is absurd. The 20-year plan is based mainly on religious ideas. It hardly has anything to do with reality.”

Has anyone contacted Yassin Musharbash, read that passage to him, and asked him what he thinks of the Islamic State’s declaration of the caliphate, and of the tens of thousands of Muslims from all over the world who take that declaration seriously enough to travel to Iraq and Syria to live and wage jihad in the caliphate?

It’s the delusionists who can’t reconcile reality. Virtually everything has happened as opponents of jihad have predicted for years. My decade-long warnings at my website, Atlas Shrugs (PamelaGeller.com), and in my books and articles were met with scorn, derision and defamation. But I was right. The Islamic jihadists have achieved what they set out to do. The Islamic State is an al-Qaida spinoff.

Hussein’s book was not the work of a fantasist. Musharbash noted that “he has not only spent time in prison with al-Zarqawi, but has also managed make contact with many of the network’s leaders. Based on correspondence with these sources, he has now brought out a book detailing the organization’s master plan.”

Hussein himself explained: “I interviewed a whole range of al-Qaida members with different ideologies to get an idea of how the war between the terrorists and Washington would develop in the future.” The first of the seven steps to the caliphate was “the awakening” – Musharbash explained that “this has already been carried out and was supposed to have lasted from 2000 to 2003, or more precisely from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 in New York and Washington to the fall of Baghdad in 2003. The aim of the attacks of 9/11 was to provoke the U.S. into declaring war on the Islamic world and thereby ‘awakening’ Muslims. ‘The first phase was judged by the strategists and masterminds behind al-Qaida as very successful,’ writes Hussein.”

Sept. 11 was to wake up the world to Islam. Did it not do just that? Didn’t the Ground Zero Mosque imam Faisal Abdul Rauf say as much in 2010 when the vicious fight over that mosque was underway? “9/11,” he declared, “was a watershed, was a major milestone, and a major catalytic force in, in catalyzing the attention toward the issue of Islam, its presence in the West, and it brought into much greater prominence our work and the importance of our work.”

After that was to come “Opening Eyes,” a phase that was to last until 2006, during which “al-Qaida wants an organization to develop into a movement.” This was to be followed by “Arising and Standing Up” from 2007 to 2010, during which, according to Hussein, “There will be a focus on Syria.”

During the fourth phase, from 2010 to 2013, “Hussein writes that al-Qaida will aim to bring about the collapse of the hated Arabic governments.” Right on schedule, Mubarak was toppled in Egypt, Gadhafi in Libya and Ben Ali in Tunisia, with Assad facing an ongoing civil war in Syria. Then during the fifth phase, an “Islamic state, or caliphate,” would actually be declared. Musharbash wrote: “The plan is that by this time, between 2013 and 2016, Western influence in the Islamic world will be so reduced and Israel weakened so much, that resistance will not be feared.”

Here we are. All this has unfolded just as they said: the awakening of the ummah is illustrated by the Western Muslims flocking to wage jihad in the Middle East. And the focus on Syria is also exactly as predicted. It’s amazing.

So what is to follow? Musharbash wrote: “Hussein believes that from 2016 onward there will be a period of ‘total confrontation.’As soon as the caliphate has been declared the ‘Islamic army’ it will instigate the ‘fight between the believers and the non-believers’ which has so often been predicted by Osama bin Laden.”

After that, the “final stage is described as ‘definitive victory.’ Hussein writes that in the terrorists’ eyes, because the rest of the world will be so beaten down by the ‘one-and-a-half billion Muslims,’ the caliphate will undoubtedly succeed. Read Musharbash’s entire piece. It’s chilling. It also coincides with the Muslim Brotherhood’s stated goal, according to a captured internal document written in the early 1990s, of “eliminating and destroying the Western Civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and Allah’s religion is made victorious over other religions.” According to a U.S. government memorandum, “shortly after Hamas was founded in 1987, as an outgrowth of the Muslim Brotherhood … the International Muslim Brotherhood ordered the Muslim Brotherhood chapters throughout the world to create Palestine Committees, whose job it was to support Hamas with ‘media, money and men.’” To accomplish this, the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. created the U.S. Palestine Committee, which the foremost Muslim group in the U.S., the Hamas-tied Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, later joined. Since then, CAIR has worked to undermine every counter-terror measure that has ever been proposed or implemented.

Al-Qaida and the Brotherhood sketched out a plan that was neither absurd nor crazy, and the jihadists have followed it precisely. They have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, with their influence now reaching into the White House. All this vividly illustrates that those of us who have been sounding the alarm about Islamic jihad all these years have been absolutely right. Ignore us at your own peril.

Islamic Immigration

Islamic immigration is another form of jihad. This will affect survival, Shar’ ia in America and the mosque.

Even when Muslims are a minority population they can and do transform whole cultures and societies. And not for the better.

Why? Because their holy book is a totalitarian ideology founded on submission and world domination. And toward that end, Islam is on the march. Meanwhile, the West remains mired in cowardice and complicity. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in Europe, which is on the fast track to join the Caliphate.

Not to be outdone by Europe’s madness, the United States is traveling down the same bloody path, importing large numbers of Muslims from Islamic countries thanks to the Islamophile sitting in the Oval Office and a nation full of dhimmis.

A Quick Intro Into Islam

I. Mohammad: Islam’s Only Prophet. Mohammad was born in Mecca to the Quraysh tribe. His parents die and he is entrusted to an Uncle. Eventually, he marries Khadija, a wealthy widow.
A. He received his first “revelation” in 610 A.D. He was supposedly in a cave and heard the voice of Gabriel (a.k.a., holy spirit) (Quran 96:1-5)
B. Mohammad’s prophetic life is divided into two crucial sections:
1. Meccan Period: The Meccan period lasts from 610 to 623 A.D. The Meccan period is characterized by (1) pray, (2) reading, (3) share what he knew with only those in Mecca and weakness.
2. Medinah Period: This period lasts from 623 to 632 A.D. This period is marked by these firsts:
a. The Mediniah treaty; the Islamic State; the Mohammadian period mosque; the jihad; the offensive jihad against the Meccanians and strength.
C. Mohammad’s travels from Mecca to Medinah is called the Hijrah (migration). Islamic sources claim Mohammad kicked out because he claimed that the ka’ bal was Allah’s house and demanded that Meccans remove the idols stored therein.
1. The Hijrah is the starting point of Islamic history, Each year is described as A.H. So 2012 A.D. is 1434 A.H.
2. Believers count time based on Jesus’ sacrifice while Muslims count time based on Mohammad’s migration.
D. Mohammad is Islam’s only prophet. He is the perfect man/Muslim pattern for all Islam. (Qur’ an 8:24) Accordingly, Allah had numerous prophets like Adam, Abraham and Jesus.
1. Mohammad was not Allah’s son therefore, not deity.
2. Mohammad was a prophet equal to Jesus.
3. After Mohammad there would be no more prophets but Caliphs. Caliphs cannot exist without an Islamic state.

II. Islamic Sources of Authority. Islam has two sources of authority: The Qur’ an and Sunnah. The Sunnah consists of the Hadith and Sira.
A. The Qur’ an: It has 114 Surahs (chapters) consisting of ayats (miracles). The Qur’ an is not in chronological order.
1. Each chapter is ordered in the Qur’ an by length expect for Surah 1 and 114. The longer chapters are at the beginning with the shorter at the end.
a. The original Qur’ an is before Allah’s face.
b. Gabriel revealed the Qur’ an over Mohammad’s life til 632 A.D.
c. It was recorded on rocks, leaves and skins. It was put together after Mohammad’s death.
d. It is considered the first piece of Arab literature.
e. It is considered perfect and very words of Allah superceding all other revelations including the Bible.
f. It cannot be fully understood unless read in Arabic.
2. Examples: At-Tawbah 9:5, 13-14, 29-31, 33
B. The Hadith: This refers to the sayings of Mohammad and the first four righteously guided Caliphs.
1. There are hundreds of thousands of sayings inventoried into five Sahih (sound) collects by Buhkrai, Muslim, Timirtha,
2. There are four categorizations: Sahih (Sound), hasan (good), da’if (weak) and maudu’ (fabricated)
3. Important: A hadith (ahadith, pl) which is sound or good is as binding on a Muslim as the Qur’ an. (Sahih Muslim 53:392)
C. The Sira: The Sira refers to Mohammad’s life. The Qur’ an demands seventy times that Muslims are to emulate Mohammad and if they do not they will end up hell.
1. Sirat Rasul Allah by ibn Ishaq is the official biography of Mohammad’s life. It is over 800 pages long. The biography was written over 100 years after Mohammad’s death. Examples:
a. Orders the assassination of Abu Afak.
b. Married Alisha at either 6 or 9 years old and had sexual intimacy at either 9 or 12 years old.
2. The Qur’ an commands all Muslims to follow Muhammad’s life example to the greatest degree. Therefore, the Sira is as binding as the Qur’ an.
a. Often, non-Muslims mistakenly believe the Qur’ an is the only “holy” book for Islam. It is not.
b. It is not possible to know Islam if a person has not studied the Sunna.

III. The Mosque. For most non-Muslims the mosque (masjid, مسجد) is probably the piece of Islam most will see next to possibly a hejaab (حجيب) or a Qur’ an. The mosque is also one of the more mysterious aspect of Islam both doctrinally and functionally. There are approximately 2,100 plus mosques in America and they have increased 74% in the last eleven years.
A. Islam has no shar’ ia about structure. The mosque’s look can range from drab, modern to gothic.
B. Islam does have shar’ ia about function and role. The Shar’ ia precedent for a mosque’s function is Mohammad’s mosque in Medinah (Qaradawi). Every mosque must follow this precedent to be shar’ ia-compliant.
1. What is the general way Americans look at a mosque? The Islamic center (mosque) is no different than a church meeting house.
2. In some ways this is true. But not in all ways. In fact, there is at least one significant difference between the function of a mosque and church.
C. Lets return to Medinah and Mohammad’s first mosque. The function of this mosque is related in a very good book called “Exposing the Mosque.”
1. State Affairs.
a. Mohammad meet delegations from other countries at the mosque.
b. Mohammad received pledges of allegiance from other tribes at the mosque.
c. All state affairs were conducted in the mosque.
2. Legal Affairs.
a. Judges operated courts in the mosque handing down sentences as well.
3. Religious Affairs.
a. The mosque is the point from which Shar’ ia was developed and spread throughout the Islamic state.
4. Jihad (Physical warfare)
a. Mohammad called for Muslims to resist non-Islamic forces by jihad.
b. All aspects of jihad were discussed and developed at the mosque.
c. Mohammad declared the inferiority of non-Muslims at the mosque.
d. Those who assassinated others for others were praised at the mosque.
e. All aspects of jihad were developed and discussed at the mosque.
f. Every conflict Islam was involved in was offensive: Badr (624 AD), Uhud (625 AD), Mecca (630 AD), Fertile Crescent, North Africa, Persia and Byzantine (633-42).
D. The biggest difference between the function of a mosque and church is jihad. So, what is jihad in Islam?
1. Mohammad: I was sent by Allah to fight until people accept Allah.
2. Umdat Al-Sahlik: Jihad is fighting against non-Muslims to impose Islam.
3. Yusfi Qaradawi: The Meccan mosque is precedent for today’s mosques.
4. Mosque in Raleigh: The mosque is the center of Islamic expansion worldwide.
E. Islam originated in Mecca but moved to Medinah. In Medinah Mohammad created a treaty which at the time included the Muslims who migrated with him, Jews and Christians.
1. This is the official start of the Islamic state. While setting up the Islamic state Mohammad created the first mosque (majid). The mosque and Islamic state are inseparable.
2. Mohammad’s mosque became the State center for the religious, political, economic, judicial and military (jihad).
3. Shar’ ia demands that the function of that mosque become the function of every mosque, including mosques in America!

Excerpt:

“And military training is from the requisites of Jihād, and it has the same goals as it. And the Muslim Brother is susceptible to injury or martyrdom while in training, so what is obligatory upon him is to make his intention sincere, and for his goal from the training to be Jihād so the Word of Allāh will be the Highest, so that full rewards will be recorded for him, In Shā’ Allāh. As the reward promised for the Mujāhidīn is all contingent upon the condition of the action being “In the Path of Allāh.”

So he must not train or perform Jihād with the aim that he be mentioned and for his stance to be seen, then it be said about him that he is courageous. Nor with the aim that he return to his country then stand in the place of glory, so that it be said about him “The courageous Mujāhid who surpassed his peers.” As the Messenger of Allāh, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said, “Verily, the first person who will be judged upon on the Day of Resurrection is a man who was martyred. So he is brought, then He verifies to him His virtues, so he recognizes them. He says, ‘Then what did you do with them?’ He says, ‘I fought in You (i.e. Your Cause) until I was martyred.’ He says, ‘You lied. Rather you fought so that it would be said ‘(He is) fearless’ and it was said’, then it is ordered in his regard, so he is dragged upon his face until he is placed in the Fire.” 1

And the Muslim must not train or perform Jihād with the aim of reaching a financial benefit or leadership and surpassing someone besides him. Because he might be killed before he attains anything from that, so he will have lost the Dunyā and the Hereafter, and that is the Evident Loss. 2 And the Messenger of Allāh, صلى الله عليه وسلم, has said, “Two hungry wolves sent into sheep are not more corrupting to them than the greed of a person for wealth and honour is to his religion.” 3 And its meaning is that greed for wealth and honour, and it is leadership, corrupts the Religion more severely than the corruption of two hungry wolves to a stable of sheep. So what is left of it after this?”

Jihad and the Effects Of Intention Upon It

This clip is shows a rally for the supposedly moderate Muslim Brotherhood. The speaker is Egyptian cleric Safwat Higazi who is launching the campaign for the MB presidential candidate Muhammad Mursi. The cleric’s speaking is chilling. This is the group Obama’s administration and the courts are codling to.  While the Marxist-in-Chief continues to deplete our military both of funds and good personal those who are the recipients of the so-called Arab Spring are preparing for war.

First in Europe and now in the United States, Muslim groups have petitioned to establish enclaves in which they can uphold and enforce greater compliance to Islamic law. While the U.S. Constitution enshrines the right to religious freedom and the prohibition against a state religion, when it comes to the rights of religious enclaves to impose communal rules, the dividing line is more nebulous. Can U.S. enclaves, homeowner associations, and other groups enforce Islamic law?

Such questions are no longer theoretical. While Muslim organizations first established enclaves in Europe,[1] the trend is now crossing the Atlantic. Some Islamist community leaders in the United States are challenging the principles of assimilation and equality once central to the civil rights movement, seeking instead to live according to a separate but equal philosophy. The Gwynnoaks Muslim Residential Development group, for example, has established an informal enclave in Baltimore because, according to John Yahya Cason, director of the Islamic Education and Community Development Initiative, a Baltimore-based Muslim advocacy group, “there was no community in the U.S. that showed the totality of the essential components of Muslim social, economic, and political structure.”[2]

Baltimore is not alone. In August 2004, a local planning commission in Little Rock, Arkansas, granted The Islamic Center for Human Excellence authorization to build an internal Islamic enclave to include a mosque, a school, and twenty-two homes.[3] While the imam, Aquil Hamidullah, says his goal is to create “a clean community, free of alcohol, drugs, and free of gangs,”[4] the implications for U.S. jurisprudence of this and other internal enclaves are greater: while the Little Rock enclave might prevent the sale of alcohol, can it punish possession and in what manner? Can it force all women, be they residents or visitors, to don Islamic hijab (headscarf)? Such enclaves raise the fundamental questions of when, how, and to what extent religious practice may supersede the U.S. Constitution.

Islamic Monotheism (Tawhid)

Islam is one of, if not, the fastest growing religio-political entities today. Islam grows through Da’wah (preaching) and jihad (struggle through holy war). Although I do not intend to go into great historical detail about Islam, a general understanding of Islam’s history is essential to fully understanding this entity and its writings.

Islam began when Mohammad supposedly received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel about 610 A.D. He grew up in Mecca as a member of the Quraysh tribe. He spent the first thirteen years of his prophetship in the city of Mecca which is in modern Saudi Arabia. During this period Islam was weak and small. This period was divided into two sections for Mohammad. In the first period Mohammad was commanded to only pray and read.  In the second period Mohammad was permitted to also warn. He was to warn his relatives, tribe, Arabs in the area, all of Arabia and then to the whole world. (1) Sound familiar?

The Meccan period ended when Mohammad’s protector, his uncle Abu Talib, died and the Meccans forced him out of town. The Meccans believed themselves to be very progressive and they accepted any god into their pantheon as long as the deity’s followers did not disturb the religious matrix. The Ka’ bal was a big black box in the center of town. According to Islamic mythology the Ka’ bal was built by Abraham and Ishamael when they visited the area of modern Saudi Arabia. During Mohammad’s stay the Ka’ bal contained 360 idols of the various deities worshiped by those in the vicinity including a picture of Jesus and Mary. Mohammad, as Islam has done throughout its history, attempted to force Allah onto the people of Mecca disturbing the religious matrix. For this Mohammad was run out of town. He went to Medinah which is about 150 miles from Mecca but still within Saudi Arabia.

Mohammad is now at odds with the Meccans especially his tribe and he is forced to emigrate to Medinah. The Medinah period is of tremendous importance to Islamic history. Mohammad stayed in Medinah for about eight years. This is the Hajj or Hijra. There are two important items associated with the emigration. The Hajj is the journey which every Muslim male who is able must make at least once in his lifetime. In addition, the Islamic calendar begins when Mohammad emigrated to Medinah. The Islamic calendar is lunar and defined by the letters AH or the year of the Hijra. The 2012 A.D. is 1433 AH.

The first thing Mohammad does when he reaches Medinah was to explain to the indigenous population that he was Allah’s prophet and asked if the three Medinah tribes would be his protectors. They agreed with the caveat that they would be a part of Mohammad’s state. Mohammad did two very important things when he moved to Medinah. The first thing he did was to set up the first Islamic state by the Treaty of Medinah. Secondly, Mohammad set up the first mosque under oversight of the Islamic state. The mosque and Islamic state are inseparable. The Medinah era is divided into a peaceful and violent periods. The Meccan era is all peaceful because Islam was consistently weak.  But this was not the case in Medinah. The first period in Medinah was peaceful because the Medinah tribes protected Mohammad and Mohammad had brought together the Jews, “Christians” and Muslims to be one people by treaty. But the Qurayish continually caused Mohammad problems as he did them. About sixteen or so months after the emigration Muslim raiders attack a Meccan caravan and blood flows. Mohammad uses this event to permit Muslims to use violence against their enemies. Finally, he permits unfettered warfare against all unbelievers. (At Tawbah 9:5)

About 9 AH, Mohammad returns to Mecca. During his stay in Medinah he created and trained an Army and then militarily overthrew the Meccans, killed those who did not support him, cleansed the Ka’ bal of all the idols, proclaimed Mecca his capital and the Ka’ bal the house of Allah. From Mecca, the Muhammadan armies spread out across the Near and Middle East into Eastern and Western Europe and Africa. Eventually, Islam would control 2/3rds of Europe and the Caliphate’s (Islamic state) capital would be set up in Cordova, Spain. In time, the Islamic hordes would be driven out of Western and Easter Europe. The Caliphate setup in Turkey after the collapse of the Caliphate in Western Europe in the Ottoman Empire but would be dissolved in 1923-24. The Islamic state would again collapse and breakup into numerous squabbling nations which is a far cry from the glory days of Mohammad’s Islamic state. Primarily, Islam is centered within what is now called the Middle East nevertheless, it has always had a strong presence in the Near East and its influence is growing considerably in the West and Orient. Mohammad was poisoned and died in 632 A.D.

Islamic Monotheism (Tawhid)

The heart of Islam is not Shar’ ia but tawhid which drives everything. Tawhid refers to the oneness of Allah or what we would call Islamic monotheism. To understand tawhid is to understand Islam. Everyday there is an article in which someone tries to answer the question why Muslims seem to hate the non-Muslim world. Some of those who try to answer this question are simply clueless. They refuse to listen to the Islamic message through Shar’ ia. Oftentimes, these individuals reduce the problem to being the fault of America. The problem is that such an absurd reduction does not and cannot account for America’s conflict with Muslims in the early 1800s. Others writers are well versed in the issue but have decided to separate Islam into the religious and political. The West especially America does separate the two to an extent due to Constitutional considerations. The First Amendment specifically forbids the Federal Government to interfere in religious affairs or set up a Federally-run religious institution. So, these well-meaning people believe we can approach Islam through our Western hermeneutical glasses. In this case the problem is twofold. In some cases, the individuals in this group ignore Shar’ ia and focus on what they believe to be the political reasons for Islam’s hatred of the non-Islamic world. On the hand, some individuals in this group understand perfectly what Shar’ ia says but are afraid to bring in “religion” because of Constitutional protections. Nevertheless, the Constitution does not protect a religion bent on overthrowing the Constitution. It is both sedition and treason. It is seditious because Islam calls for the implementation of Shar’ ia and a Caliphate which clearly demands the destruction of our Constitutional Republic. It is also treasonous because Islam qua Islam commands the individual Muslim to work toward implementing Shar’ ia and the Caliphate in non-Islamic countries. The conflict between Dar al-Islami (house of submission) and Dar al-hard (War Zone) is Islamic monotheism. Mohammad supposedly stated in an ahadith:

“Allah’s Apostle said, ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.'” (Bukhari, 8:387)

I will explain ahadiths in greater detail in another article but an ahadith is a saying of either Mohammad’s or the first four Righteous Caliphs or Islamic rulers. A sound ahadith carries as much weight as does the Qur’ an. All of Bukhari’s ahadiths are considered sound. The Qur’ an states:

“And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do.” (An-Afal 8:39, Noble Qur’ an)

Mohammad clearly defines his call as being to fight against everyone until all accept Allah as the only deity to worship. The Qur’ an commands Muslims to fight until there is no more fitnah (contention) and all worship is for Allah alone. These are two of many ayats (proofs) within Shar’ ia which clearly and unequivocally state that Islam’s purpose is to force Islamic monotheism upon the world of Dar al-harb. The ninth chapter of the Qur’ an (At-Tawbah) claims to contain some of the last words of Allah to Mohammad. In the last three verses of that chapter Allah commands Mohammad to fight against unbelievers because they do not believe in Islamic monotheism.

Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth! They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilah (God – Allah) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) . Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him). They (the disbelievers, the Jews and the Christians) want to extinguish Allah’s Light (with which Muhammad has been sent – Islamic Monotheism) with their mouths, but Allah will not allow except that His Light should be perfected even though the Kafirun (disbelievers) hate (it).” (At-Tawbah 9:29-32)

In reality, there is nothing special about tawhid. Shar’ ia declares that Allah is not three:

O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, (“Be!” – and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Ruh) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: “Three (trinity)!” Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allah is (the only) One Ilah (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs. (An-Nisa 4:171)

In addition, the Qur’ an claims Allah is not begotten:

Glorified and High be He! From ‘Uluwan Kabira (the great falsehood) that they say! (i.e.forged statements that there are other gods along with Allah, but He is Allah, the One, the Self-Sufficient Master, whom all creatures need. He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none comparable or coequal unto Him). (17:111)

Finally, Allah is said not to have begotten a son.

He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Who has begotten no son (children or offspring) and for Whom there is no partner in the dominion. He has created everything, and has measured it exactly according to its due measurements. (Al-Furqan 25:2)

Therefore, Islamic monotheism is merely the belief that there is one person in the Islamic “Godhead” for the lack of a better term. The Islamic deity is similar to the belief that Jesus is the only deity in the Godhead with some very important distinctions. Of course, in Islam Allah does not play act any other individuals. Clearly, the Biblical description of Deity provides evidence that Christians and Muslims do not worship the same deity as is often claimed. Chrislam is a fledgling attempt to merge Islam and “Christianity” into a single entity in which the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is swallowed up by the Allah of Ishamael.

In reality the two are very different. The Bible refers to three separate individuals as Deity in the true sense of the term.  The Father, Son and Spirit are called Deity. (1 John 3:1; John 10:30; Acts 5:3-4) Yet, despite their separateness they are one in two different senses. In one sense all three individuals are one Deity and not two, three, four or more. Isaiah provides a tremendous explanation of this oneness in chapters 41 through 46. The three is also one in the sense of essence of what makes a person what they are. This is what Jesus is referring to in John 10:30 when he says, “I and my Father are one.” The term one refers to essence and therefore, this Jesus claims to be of the same essence of as the Father. This essence is Deity. This is the reason the Jews pick up stones to stone him. How can the three be one in essence? The term infinity (Psalms 147:5) describes this essence. Deity is infinite in all areas therefore, since the Father, Son and Spirit are Deity they are infinite. But if all three are infinite there is no distinction between their essence. Thus, they are one or in complete unity. Clearly, Allah is not remotely similar to Jehovah.

Tawhid not only underlies the doctrine of the Islamic deity but it also underlies the doctrine of Shar’ ia. Mohammad Hashim Kamali says, “Tawhid is the first article of the Muslim faith and a major theme of the Qur’ an. There is only one God. Likewise there is one Islam. one scripture, one ummah (community) and one Shariah.” (2) Despite the many contradictions inherent in the Islamic view of tawhid, the concept supposedly underlies Islam’s religious, political, economic and social concepts. The principle of tawhid forbids a faithful Muslim from unnecessarily involving themselves in the religious, political, economic or social aspects of the host country. When Islam is weak within a host nation Shar’ ia provides numerous exceptions nevertheless, Islam’s overriding purpose in any non-Islamic country is to become strong enough to impose Islamic values on the host country whether they like it or not. The Qur’ an states:

“It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad ) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) hate (it).” (At-Tawbah 9:33)

Tawhid therefore, forbids a Muslim from integrating into the society of the host nation in which they live. Again, Shar’ ia allows for a Muslim to outwardly act like those around them when they are in a position of weakness as long as they do not deny Islam in the heart. This is the principle of taqiyya or religious deception. Nevertheless, the Muslim’s goal is to impose Shar’ ia and an Islamic state (Caliphate) on non-Muslim countries.

Violating tawhid leads to the greatest sin in Islam: Shirk. Shirk is translated polytheism and is the worship of others along with Allah or attributing divine characteristics to someone other than Allah. There are three forms. The first is Ash-Shirk-al-Akbar (major Shirk) The major Shirk involves (1) praying to someone other than Allah, (2) doing deeds of worship toward other deities, (3) rendering obedience to any authority against Allah’s wishes and (4) showing love to another than what belongs to Allah alone. The second form is Ash-Shirk-al-Asghar (minor Shirk). This Shirk is doing acts of worship to show off. The third form is Ash-Shirk-al-Khafi (inconspicious Shirk).  This Shirk is being inwardly dissatisfied with Allah’s provisions. The major Shirk is the most serious and it is the only form for which a Muslim could lose paradise.

Yet, this is does not fully explain Shirk for Shirk has two categories and both are driven by tawhid. The first category involves worshiping a being other than Allah. Christians commit polytheism by worshiping Jesus as God the Word who became flesh as God’s son. This is almost unforgivable. The second category of Shirk is obeying man-made laws. Most Christians are not familiar with this category. Shar’ ia teaches that Allah is sovereign and therefore, he alone has the right to make laws for mankind. Abu Hamza Al-Masri like many jurist turn to At-Tawbah 9:31 as evidence of this. At-Tawbah states:

They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilah (God – Allah) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) . Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).”

This passage states that Jews and Christians take their rabbis and monks as lords by obeying them. Mohammad supported this passage with an ahadith explaining that the rabbis and monks made laws which Allah did not and that by following the rabbis and monks they were literally worshiping them. (Noble Qur’ an, page 255) To worship another violates Allah’s sovereignty and the principles of tawhid. For this reason, a faithful Muslim will not willingly obey manmade laws. Therefore, a Muslim commits major Shirk by obeying another deity or manmade laws as in our Constitutional Republic.
